Obsessed Day 29 – Phase 2 Begins

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.” -Jim Rohn

OK time to check in. Yesterday was my rest day and since I wrote about leaky gut I opted not to post my current stats. So here you go:

26 days in I’ve lost 2.4 lbs and 8.25″. Now, as much as I wish the scale had a bigger number, I cannot be dissatisfied with that inches lost number. Especially since I was on the road traveling for 17 of those 26 days. That’s pretty damn good results.

Today started phase two. Here is the shocker for me. Yesterday, when I did my stats and entered all the information for this phase, it told me I am supposed to eat MORE! People…I couldn’t even eat all the food for phase one and now I’m supposed to eat 200 calories more. Well, lets just say that that ain’t happening. I am happy to eat plenty and get my nutrition but my body works like this: When I’m working out and fueling my body properly, I don’t have cravings or want to eat a lot. That’s just how I am. When I’m complacent and lazy is when I eat a ton. It may sound backward and maybe its from years of eating out of boredom or to heal emotions but when all my gears are working well and properly, I eat food when I need it and ONLY when I need it. What’s your diet like when you exercise?

For food today I kept it very simple. Grain free pancakes this morning, homemade grain free fruit bar for lunch and salmon, cooked greens and sautéed butternut squash for dinner. No snacking except for a couple of sultanas after dinner. When I eat light like that, it makes me feel much better. And due to me trying to get my gut health right, I’ve cut out all my shakes except the post workout protein which I may also exclude if after a week I’m not seeing the improvement I’m looking for. I’ve really been digging making all my food from scratch. Why not try making my own post workout protein, too, if need be. Any good suggestions?

And finally my workout was insane in the membrane. It was all about that booty and man did she make it hurt. Here are a couple of shots of what it was like. If you choose to laugh at my look of bewilderment I understand. The first day of a brand new workout is a bit confusing but even I will laugh at my facial expressions.

Obsessed – Day 28 – What Kind of Guts Do You Have?

REST DAY!!!!  I gotta tell you guys, I didn’t do much resting today though.  I’ve been on my feet so much that they actually hurt. HA!  I’ve been in my kitchen since I got up this morning, trying new recipes and making cookies for my man and cooking a late St. Patrick’s day dinner which is still cooking.   There was about an hour break in there where I cleaned my bathroom shower and tub which was a nightmare because the shower doors were awful.  We’d tried so many different glass cleaners and FINALLY found one that works but it took many passes and much elbow grease to get it clean.  Damn soap scum.  Then the bathtub is large enough that I have to get in it to clean the front half and the ledge behind it and then climb out to clean the back half.  Its truly comical.  But the reality behind it taking so long to clean one bathroom is that I’ve been traveling so much that I’ve not had time or taken the time to do it.  The boyfriend and I have a deal….I clean everything except the floors (which he’s been cleaning since 10:00 this morning because he’s obsessed with clean floors and I HATE doing floors).  OK.  Enough of that.  Let’s talk about my GUTS now.

Earlier in the week I mentioned that my guts were leaky.  Many in the world know about digestive issues.  But there are many who don’t know about digestive issues.  And as someone who has a partial education in holistic nutrition and has done tons of research online and in books, one would think that I would actually work hard to have a healthy digestive system.  However, as mentioned in previous blogs, I’m a food addict who fights the good fight of building a healthy relationship between myself and food.  I must work harder than most to be mindful of my eating (why, when, where and how). But due to many, many, MANY years of eating for pleasure, boredom, sadness, fear, etc., I’ve done a lot of damage to my body.  Leaky gut being just one of the side effects.

Leaky gut simply put is: when the intestinal wall is weakened and small particles of food are able to pass through it accessing the bloodstream.  When this happens, the food particles then travel to the liver for final digestion.  This is not the job of the liver and by the additional work being put on the liver, it adds stress to the body which, in turn, causes other problems with the endocrine system.  And so it goes from there.  Many doctors, specialists, health researchers, pharmacists, etc., will tell you that the digestive systems is the glue that holds the body together.  If our digestive system isn’t functioning properly, it will affect every other system in our body.  Case in point, I’ve had poor digestion for years and since learning that my digestion needed to be corrected and doing little to correct it, I’ve been diagnosed with adrenal fatigue, I have poor circulation in my hands and feet at time, my brain is pretty foggy a lot and focus is challenging for me.  WHEW!  That’s a lot.

What are my symptoms?

  • Inflammatory conditions
  • IBS
  • Acne
  • Food Intolerances
  • Arthritis, joint pain
  • Memory problems
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Feeling toxic
  • Bloated/Gas
  • Active stomach after eating

But there are many more possible symptoms

  • IBD
  • Other skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, hives
  • Celiac disease
  • Migraines

So what causes leaky gut?

  • Food Sensitivities & Intolerances: If you have leaky gut; offending foods will only worsen the issue and you may develop sensitivities to a multitude of other foods.  It’s not necessarily permanent. But if not treated will only get worse over time with more and more foods being triggers (my current situation; I can’t eat much of anything without having problems).
  • Stress: Stress doesn’t just come from work, relationships, money or the other more commonly considered issues.  Yo-yo dieting, rapid weight loss or gain and addictions of any kind can also play a large part in stressing the body.
  • Incomplete Chewing: It allows larger than normal proteins into the bloodstream. I was taught in school that you should chew your liquid food and drink your solid food.  Sounds weird, huh?  The idea behind this is that you’re activating the digestive enzymes that begin in the saliva in the mouth.  So if you don’t allow this to happen by chewing your food, the beginning stages of digestion are skipped and already the rest of the body is working overtime as soon as you swallow.
  • Large meals:  Overeating will overwhelm your digestive system. This goes back to the addiction I mentioned earlier.  I was a binge eater from early in life.  Food was my best friend even as a child.  I could polish off a bag of bbq potato chips like nobody’s business by the age of 10.  Think my guts said thank you?  Probably not!
  • Low Levels of Stomach Acid: If you don’t have adequate stomach acid (HCl), you can’t digest your food properly, period.  Inappropriately large proteins and pathogens can reach your intestines. One of the best ways to know if this is a possibility is to mix a 1/4 tsp of baking soda in a glass of water first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything.  Wait to see how long it takes to belch. If you haven’t belched within 5 minutes, you probably have low stomach acid.
  • Low Levels of Pancreatic Enzymes:  Enzymes are so very important.  Once you have leaky gut this will only worsen the issue.  I’m currently taking a digestive enzyme to help me out but once my body is back on track, my digestive enzymes should be at the proper levels.
  • Medications: Prescription antibiotics are indiscriminate killers – they kill the good and the bad. If you must take them, try taking a double dose of probiotics to help offset the damage done by the antibiotics. Frequent use of NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, Motrin, Aleve) can very often damage the gut lining.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol compromises gut health, particularly on an empty stomach.  Alcohol abuse makes people much more susceptible to a compromised gut.  Oh yes, this is me also.  I’ve been sober for a number of years but prior to sobering up, I had quite a go with the go-go juice for about 18 years.

I’ve included quite a bit of info in this post about leaky gut causes and things that can help.  One of the best things I’ve read about so far for healing the gut is collagen, bone broth and gelatin.  If you’re vegan, I know there are some options out there for plant based collagen as well.  This is how I’ve started my healing journey.  Yesterday and today I had a bullet proof coffee with collagen in it.  I’ll share some of the meals I’m trying this week also.  In my research, it would seem that the best eating program for healing the gut is the Scientific Carbohydrate Diet which I made my entire meal plan out for the week around.  Time will tell and I will tell all of you as this journey progresses.

I hope that any of you who read this might find some of it helpful.  There is a ton of research on the market these days but if you just don’t like to do it or don’t have time, feel free to shoot me a message and I’ll gladly help you out as much as I can.

“Note: I am not a doctor or a certified nutrition.  All information in this post is based on personal knowledge and experience and recommendations are from personal experience.  If you are experiencing any of the possible symptoms listed above, consult your doctor before treating it.”

Obsessed – Day 27 – Phase 1 DONE!

Happy Saturday and St. Patrick’s Day.  Did you wear your green?

Today was a good day.  We were up super late last night and so slept late this morning.  Got up, grabbed coffee (I tried a new creamer today Califia Almond Milk w/ coconut) had a quick breakfast of an egg and a spoonful of mashed sweet potatoes and then headed out to run errands.

As soon as I got home it was time to finish my last workout for phase 1 of 80 Day Obsession.  The last workout was, of course, cardio flow.  This workout kills me in so many ways.  It’s one of the most intense cardio workouts I’ve ever done. My heart rate maxes out, my legs max out and by then end I just want to throw up. True story. The funny thing is, it looks so easy but, my friends, it’s NOT! Here are a couple of snapshots.

After the workout it was time to color my hair (prematurely gray is not sexy) and then a much needed bath with some amazing muscle soak that I found at Whole Foods while my hair sets.

My body is more tired tonight than it’s been in a very long time.  I’m not used to not having energy to the level that I don’t have energy right now. But I refuse to quit.  I’m seeing the changes happening and I will finish.  I am sore, fatigued and weak by the end of Saturday every week.  But by Monday, I’m looking forward to the next workout because I can see every week how much stronger I’m getting.  Isn’t that fantastic?

OK, moving on from my boasting…we played a round of video golf which was a ton of fun and then I went to start dinner.  I had planned to have this great St. Patricks day feast but have never cooked corned beef before.  OOPS!  THREE HOURS?!!!That’s how long it takes.  So breakfast for dinner was had and the feast will happen tomorrow as well as some other meal prep to get me started on my gut healing journey.  Now, we’re just lying in bed and it feels amazing to just lay down.

How are you feeling?  Any adrenal or fatigue issues with you?

Thank you all so much who are watching this moment in my life and being a part of it.  Those of you who are reaching out to me, I really appreciate the support and kindness.

~good night

Obsessed – Day 26 – Almost Done with Phase 1

I’ve had one very long day!  Woke up at 6:30, crawled out of bed at 7:00, and COFFEE!!!  I had another day of working in Denver so after a quick breakfast, I was off and running.  It snowed north of us. That was a big bummer to see. I wish it would snow at my house!

I finished my work around 3:00 in Denver and heading back to the springs was excited to workout.  Its LEG DAY!!!  I’ve never liked leg day until now.  This program is so packed with upper body on every other day that leg day is almost like a rest day only not.  I still hurt and I still break a sweat and I still use weights.  But at no point during leg day am I in a plank position and for that, my friends, I am happy to see this day arrive.

I arrived home around 4:30 and checked in with Tyler who was also in need of a workout.  I grabbed my pre-workout drink and sucked it down, changed clothes and headed for the basement.  Eager to get started because I still had my weekly grocery trip to make, I began.  This week, the weight was increased and the sets were 2 x 15.  YIKES!  When that workout ended and for a short while after, my entire lower half shook and felt like jello.

Then shower, store, home and unfortunately a very late dinner.

As for my nutrition, here’s where I’m at.  I bought only foods for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.  After a couple of days of heavy research, it seems to be one of the more structured forms of eating that truly targets healing the gut.  That’s where my head it as right now.  The plan that falls in line with my workout program involves way more food than I can or, quite frankly, should be eating.  I feel much better over the last three day in just not eating so much.  However, my digestion will be a challenge and one I’m truly ready with earnestness, to take on.  Leftovers have been consumed and tomorrow starts a new day and hopefully the beginning of a long overdue healing process.

~More to follow.

Obsessed – Day 25 – UPDATE

A few days ago I told you guys that I was struggling with my digestion. In 2008 I was diagnosed with leaky gut syndrome and then again in 2013. I’ve never been a very good follower of doctor’s orders when it comes to my adrenal fatigue or gut healing. Therefore, I have always had bouts of inflammation and continued gastrointestinal problems.

24 days ago I began a new program called 80 Day Obsession which is amazing and, by far, my favorite program to date. It comes with an eating plan that has been really great and when I’m home I actually meal plan, shop and cook daily. Because the plan allows for a lot of carbs, I’ve incorporated them into my diet daily along with many other foods that apparently I should not be eating. My digestion is worse than its been in a very long time. Upon doing some research and diving back into my holistic nutrition school books, I’ve learned much more than I had retained in the past about the long term effects of untreated leaky gut syndrome that I’m fearful of experiencing. You know what they say…we grow/learn at the rate of pain we’re in. Well, I sometimes am a slow learner with a high pain tolerance. Ha!

Starting Saturday, I’ll be changing EVERYTHING about how I eat and beginning the process of healing my guts. This weekend I’ll be posting a blog specifically about leaky gut because its incredible information and I would imagine many people have it but have no idea. Many western medicine doctors typically won’t diagnose it and immediately prescribe pills for digestion issues. Our digestive system is actually quite fascinating.

As for today, I had 3 small meals instead of the 5 I would normally eat and that was a lot. I had an egg and slice of toast (which will become excluded from my diet beginning Saturday), for lunch I had 3 ounces of cheeseburger, a slice of bacon and a cup of tomato bisque soup and for dinner I had pan sautéed shrimp, mashed sweet potatoes (which will also be eliminated) and Brussels sprouts. I also got my 55 minute workout in that was a great total body workout.

Obsessed – Day 24 – Stagefright

Can you believe we’re already half way through the week?   My my my how time flies.  Well it’s been a good day.  Another very productive day.  Here you go with my little recount and then I’ll explain my title.

We slept in a little because we stayed up way too late last night.  Alarm went off at 7:00 and I think we got out of bed at 7:30.  First came the coffee.  I’m not one of those people who will expend then energy cooking as soon as I wake up before I have coffee…even if I meal prep.  COFFEE FIRST!!!! And checking emails.

I ate breakfast around 8:30 which consisted of homemade turkey sausage, spinach and a slice of toast.  It was 2 hours before I was actually able to get my workout done due a couple of really long work calls.  But, I was very productive today.  Then I got my workout in which was cardio core.  I must say that while really don’t care for cardio, I’m getting much better at it and able to push through so much more of it.  This is a true gift of the consistency I’ve managed to maintain with my workouts since day 1.

After the workout, it was shower and straight back to work.  My back hurts from sitting at my desk all day.  Those of you who know me know I’d much rather be out talking to people than sitting in front of a computer.  But that work must be done also.  One day I’ll sit at my computer long enough to become a better blogger.  HAHA!

After work, it was back to trying new recipes.  We have an air fryer and I LOVE IT!!!! Tonight, I baked a batch of chicken wings and air fried a batch.  They both turned out great but I was amazed at how juicy and tasty the air fried batch was.  In the picture below, the dark ones were baked and then broiled with a honey bbq sauce on them (homemade) and the lighter ones just had a dry rub on them and were air fried.  I completely forgot to take a picture before we ate so these are what’s left.

Now for the explanation of the title.  I’ve wanted to, for a very long time, record videos and learn to edit them of me cooking new recipes or baking some of my pastries I so love to bake.  I even bought all the lamps and have a great camera.  But every time I think about doing it, I get stage fright.  I don’t think I’m going to flop, because it’s just me being me.  I’m not trying to become a famous you tuber or anything like that, but I LOVE to educate people and share the things I love with others.  One of these days, you’re going to see a video from.  Based on this blog, is there anything you’d like to see specifically?  I need ideas.

For now, I’ll say goodnight.  Tomorrow will be a long day of seeing customers and an early morning because workout first but COFFEE before that.

Obsessed – Day 23 – All The Good Foods

Today was a day of trying new recipes!

Breakfast today was poached egg on toast with asparagus. It was my first time poaching eggs and while they weren’t beautiful, they were cooked really well and made for a great pre-workout meal. Post workout was leftover baked almond crusted chicken and a sweet potato latke. Our dinner tonight was Italian Meatballs with homemade sauce and spaghetti squash in lieu of noodles. Oh my gosh was it all fantastic!

My workout today was ALL THE BOOTY with resistant loops and man did my butt burn. However, my man told me just last night how good its looking and that certainly helps with the extra push, adding resistance and going harder when the compliments start coming in. Today I doubled up on my loops for a lot of the moves. Yellow being the lightest and blue the heaviest. Here are a couple of picture. Guys…I never knew resistance loops could work muscles so hard.

Anyhow, it was a good day working from home. I got a ton done, cooked some great meals, soaked in the hot tub for a while and played an epic game of video golf which was a blast. Some much needed down time was has tonight as well as lots of laughter.

I am exhausted and off to bed.

-until tomorrow!!
